Riverdale recreation report

In 2015 Riverdale Recreation Commission successfully offered a variety of programs within the community for the advancement of recreation, culture and healthy living. Some  programs from last year include a 15-week after-school indoor soccer program at Rivers Elementary, a hunters’ safety course at Riverdale Community Centre (RCC), spring and fall yoga at Rivers  United Church, St. John’s Ambulance babysitting course at RCC,Terry Fox Run, Red Cross swimming lessons, drop-in youth floor ball and Rivers senior men’s hockey tournament at RCC.

Rivers committee proceeds with park plan

Winter has come and gone and Rivers Train Station Restoration Committee (RTSRC)  continues to move forward with its plans to renovate the station and be sustainable. In the fall of 2015 RTSRC applied for a provincial grant called Partners 4 Growth; it provides 50/50 cost-shared funding for regions to identify and pursue economic development opportunities.

Eden area author hopes to heal hearts

An Eden area woman has recently published a book entitled The Heart’s Journey. The author, Meredith Froese, wrote the book in hopes that it would bring healing to her own and others’ hearts. “God kept giving me hearts to write on,” Froese explained. She added, “it was a healing process for myself.”

Royal reception for Rivers residents

In mid-February Lt.-Gov.  Janice Filmon announced her plan to host a birthday party on April 21, the day Queen Elizabeth turned 90. The Queen’s representative in Manitoba invited people born in 1926 to contact her office to express their interest in attending the afternoon party at Government House. Filmon was prepared to invite the first 60 people (and one guest) who responded but her office was so overwhelmed with applications that a morning tea party was held as well. Each party had 150 people and even then, people were turned away because the House could seat no more. Among the guests who attended the afternoon affair were Rivers’ own Georgina Bollman and Bertha Shelvey, who moved to Brandon after living in Rivers for 22 years (1989-2011).
