My perspective - Time to teach failure

In the last year, a couple of pro football players have been in the news, for their parenting tactics, of all things. It started nine months ago with Pittsburgh Steelers linebacker James Harrison’s post on Instagram, in which he explained that he returned trophies given to his sons, because they were participation awards. On May 11, Harrison’s teammate, DeAngelo Williams, posted a photo of his daughter with three ribbons. In the post, he explained, “I took her Field Day participation ribbon & gave it back to her teacher...then in the next event she got 1st place.”

Fashion show raises over $7,000

This year’s Central Plains Cancer Care Services fashion show, held on May 26, raised $7,480. This is up from 2015, when a total of $5,500 was raised. The models, all local cancer survivors, modeled fashions from Neepawa retailers It’s Time Fashion and Gifts and Kerreen’s Clothing, as well as The Fashion House in Minnedosa. In addition to admission, money was also raised through an auction, conducted by Brad Meyers.

Neepawa Cubs defeat Ebb & Flow

A solid seven inning effort by pitcher Garett Rempel helped to lead the Neepawa Cubs to their first win of the Santa Clara Baseball League season. Rempel allowed just four hits and no runs in Neepawa’s game on Sunday, May 29 against the Ebb and Flow Lakers, as the Cubs claimed a 2-0 victory. He aided his own cause by also going 1-for-3 at the plate with one run. Teammates Ian Kerkowich and Cody Pasowisty also contributed by driving in an RBI apiece.

The AGM of the Gladstone & District Chamber of Commerce was held at the Gladstone Golf & Country Club on May 24. Board members remain the same, being Nick Beavington (President), Don Kinley ( Vice President), Karey Thiessen (Treasurer) and Sharon Vercaigne (Secretary).

The Austin Credit Union Citizen of the Year Award meanwhile was presented to Judy Code by the Gladstone Branch account manager, Jason Manns.
